What is Blue John?
Blue-John is a unique fluor spar found only at Castleton. The mineral is found in veins in the limestone
deep within the Blue John Cavern where it has been mined for centuries.
Thought to have been named "Blue John" by John Kirk and Joseph Hall who worked the mines in the
18th Century, it is the rarest natural formation in the British Isles.
The Romans were the first to discover Blue John some 2,000 years ago.
Further evidence of the Romans love for Blue John comes
from Pompeii where two vases were unearthed during excavations of the city.
Over the centuries, Blue John has enjoyed admiration all over the world. We are proud to offer
you the opportunity to buy some of this historical stone yourself.
